How to shine online: qualities of a good online dating profile - Part II
Yesterday, I promised to go into detail about what makes an online dating profile stand out. We’ll look at the first two today:
- Using proper grammar and English (or language that you are communicating in)
- Using spell check
Using proper grammar and English (or language that you are communicating in)
I hate to say this but it is my experience that women are far more likely to judge someone based on their grammar and their command of the English language than men. If I am wrong, please direct me to this one male paragon and I will marry him immediately. I’ll even do dishes and clean the toilets too! If he has an accent too, all the better!
Just as body language can lead you to “say” something other than what is coming out of your mouth, the quality of your writing is important too. It gives the reader clues to the type of person you are in areas such as your attention to detail, and an indication of your education level or intelligence.
Here are some grammatical errors that should be avoided:
- should of instead of should have
- use of then instead of than or vice versa
- misuse of their/there/they’re, its/it’s (the word its’ does not exist!)
- misuse of apostrophes
Take the time to read over what you’ve typed, just to make sure that it makes sense. It’s not uncommon when typing for your brain to move faster than your fingers, resulting in words being omitted from your writing. Take the time to make sure your profile says what you mean to say and that it makes sense too.
Using spell check
Let’s say spelling isn’t your strong suit, and you don’t want to be judged by that. Use spell check! It’ll help you correct the most glaring mistakes and you may even learn not to make the same spelling error again. Either way, it gives you bonus points on the “attention to detail” front.
Some spelling mistakes that make me twitch are:
calender
definately
seperate
and more here.
So tell me: am I way off on the importance of a well written, error free profile? How important is a well written profile to you when considering somebody’s profile? We’ll talk about the content of the profile later but today’s focus is making sure that whatever you choose to write is free of grammatical or spelling mistakes.
