A friend and I recently both noted that we get stuck in our thinking, attitude, and habit when we stay in town too long. Challenge: with low budgets, escape can be difficult.
She recently accepted a housitting job which gave her a nice car to drive. We decided to go up to the ski basin. It’s about 15 miles from her house. We ran away for half an afternoon, and felt like we had been gone a week. A short drive, with time for stops and short walks opened our lungs and our perspectives. Cost: time and gas. Well I did take her out to lunch, so under $25.
We are fortunate in that we live in a beautiful location. However I have also lived in Kansas and Baltimore. Baltimore with no car wasn’t too bad, I could grab public transportation or walk and be at wonderful museums or restaurants. In fact all I had to do was walk about 2 blocks and go transform my day with a cup of soup, some bread in a local Spanish Seafood restaurant.
Wichita KS had a lot to offer, especially on-campus. Yet when I got a car, just driving out into the country would expand my viewpoints and attitudes.
Wherever you live, in these times, planning a few adventures each month could greatly improve your health. As a grad student we might all chip in for gas and food. (I was in my 40’s when I was a grad student.) Find a way to go beyond your daily stomping grounds, and see how a few hours can refreshen the brain and your mood. Key is: this is your life now, make it wonderfull. Write to me about your adventures. ALso go to www.writersunbound.com if you have good stories to share. Thanks!
