Add spice and fun to today

Add spice and fun to today

Sometimes when you just start writing in your journal, you are not sure how to proceed. If you haven’t assigned a purpose to the journal (such as a business idea generation/planinng jurnal) then you have permission to choose any approach you want.

First take a moment to jot down a few notes about how you feel right now. Maybe draw a face to match. Ask yourself:
Do I want to dump feelings right now?
Do I want to create a new perspective on my sitution?
DO I want to list what I am thankful for?
Do I want to create a historical moment?
Add questionsto your list….perhaps all you need to do is write and listen to yourself.

I used to describe a concern, often about finances and then if I was really upset, I’d play with numbers. To chang my present situation I would need $x.xx money. Then I would write down 3 ideas about what I could do to create that income. Then I’d figure out a plan. Although I did not choose to explore my core feelings re: money, I would console myself witht the activitiy.

Perhaps you find or write a verse.
Perhaps you exaggerate your impression of an incident or how you feel. Do write a disclaimer, so if anyone ever read your writing that they could not use it against you in a court of law.

Your journal can: be used as a meditation, collect ideas for writing projects, self therapy, historical moments recoreded, diary for contemporary life and much more.

I had written much more but lost that when computer connectivity crashed. More later. Feel free to share, copy and print. Please give me credit and post my url. Thanks.

Take your challenges in hand

Take your challenges in hand

I was feeling frustrated with my progress at losing weight today. I needed some new ideas to get myself motivated again. Carolyn provided them for me here. SOmetimes we just need another way to look at the problem/challenge at hand.

Carolyn Hansen sure comes up with fantastic health ideas. I doubt that I would be able to follow this ompletely, however near the end are some very good exercises to experiment with. I know that I will.

Mary
What if you were to discover some new ways that will steadily awaken your natural hidden fat burning machinery to slim you down and tone you up far easier that you ever thought possible? A weight loss system that becomes so automatic, that you cannot fail to get results?

You just might be thinking that it sounds too good to be true. And, you could not be blamed for thinking this way after all, literally hundreds of weight loss/diet programs of one sort or another are available. You probably have tried some of them, and more than likely they probably did not produce the results you would have liked them to.

For decades so called ‘experts’ have told us that if we are overweight we should go on a diet to lose the excess fat. But we now know that food restriction is the very worst thing you can do if you wish to lose weight.

Our bodies are programmed to hold onto fat not lose it. This dates back to the time of our ancestors who frequently spent days or weeks without adequate food when hunting was poor or in winter when food was scarce. So the body got used to storing fat for these lean times to save itself from starving.

Go on a diet - any diet - and it won’t be long before your body starts to fight you for every ounce of your body fat as it wants to keep you alive. You want to lose it, it wants to keep it and it will win every time.

To win this battle against your body you have to get strategic and trick your body into thinking you aren’t dieting when you actually are. The main objective is to block the body from going into ’starvation mode’ and keep fat burning at its highest point, day after day, week after week.

We do this with a two pronged approach - First eat 5-6 small meals every 2-3 hours throughout the day. Each of these meals should contain 20-30 grams of protein and the balance made up of raw or cooked vegetables and a small amount of complex carbohydrate like rice, pasta or sweet potato. These meals should be around 300-400 calories each so you will be eating a bottom level of 1800 calories.

The other important part of the strategy is to perform a proper exercise program that contains at least 60% strength training exercise. This will rebuild lost muscle tissue to keep your metabolism (your body’s engine) running hot. This will allow your body to burn off the excess fat every minute of the day even when you are resting or sleeping.

No other activity will give you this metabolism boost, so forget about long, slow, boring out dated activity that we used to believe would make us lose weight like walking, jogging or cycling This type of activity is as ineffective as dieting for obtaining a strong, lean, healthy, fit body.

We have discovered better ways now to achieve our fitness and weight loss goals and one of them is interval training. Short bursts of all out activity for 10-15 seconds following by 30 seconds to one minute of slower activity. For example 10 seconds of sprinting followed by one minute of walking. Repeat these ‘intervals’ 6-12 times once or twice a week for the ultimate fat blasting, anti aging, feel good activity.

The combination of your proper exercise program and your small meal eating plan works with your body not against it as the old ways did. Instead of destroying your metabolism as dieting did the new ways protect it so weight stays lost.

We must acknowledge that we have inherited a master system, a complete blueprint for optimal activity and nutrition and we are designed to be strong, lean, energetic and fit. If we respect and work with this system we can make steady, consistent progress to our fitness goals.

Is your plan working?

Is your plan working?

Journal 101

Last night I was talking to a young man at work and found that he had a rigorous schedule outside of work. What impressed me most was that he has stopped watching TV at age 19. He has also reduced his computer time. He discovered quickly that by doing this he reads more, hikes more, has more energy and enjoys life more!

He did not mention writing however. In our fast paced environment, few people take the time to write down their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Long ago diaries and journals were part of many people’s lives. Their uses are profound and plentiful. Here a short list of some benefits and hanother list of how to begin.

1) Goal setting
2)Persoanl work
3)Tracking your life
4)Improving health
5) DIscharging emotions
6)Inner reflection
7)Creating new perspectives
8) Brainstorming
9)Gratitude
10) Integrating brain function

You could possibly add many more. Journaling helps pyschological growth. Improves problem solving, and relieves stress. Here’s a few ways to get started.

1) Buy a nice hard bound blank journal or sketchbook.
2) Alternative get a cheap small spiral bound note book.
3) Buy 2 or 3 different pens
4) Manually writing creates different brain paths than digital writing. You can use both.
5) Write anything that comes to mind.
6) Create short periods of time daily (optimally) where you can write for 10 to 60 minutes.
7) Wreite. Don’t worry about grammar, sentences, spelling, simply write, sketch, etc. JUst get started.

10 Ways to Increase Your Super Powers

A few years ago I began working with a business coach who had us do an exercise that helped us identify what our top values. Freedom was definitely one of the things at the top of my list. Because of that I have spent a lot of time and energy building a business that supports my need for freedom. Brian Tracy defines success as, “the ability to live your life, the way you want to live it, doing what you enjoy most, surrounded by people you admire and respect.” So essentially doing what you want, when you want, with people you really like to hang out with. Sounds like freedom to me! If you are like me and crave freedom, here are 10 things you can do in your own business.

1. Create blocks of time. Think of your business as a book. Make a list of all the main “chapters” then lay out time in your calendar for those chapters so you know when to work on each piece of your business. Once you are done, it’s time to play.

2. Let someone else manage your calendar. Set up an online calendar so that someone on your team can set and manage your appointments.

3. Empower your team to make decisions without you. Free yourself from questions by setting policies around things like product returns or customer service issues. When a customer calls in with a question your team will handle it without having to bring it to you.

4. Clone yourself. Spend the time to document how you do things so you can scale your company. For example, instead of doing all the one- on-one client consulting myself, I have trained consultants and they handle it.

5. Write out a new client set-up process. When the excitement of a new client is all around you it’s easy to skip or miss steps that you intended to do, but just never got to. Create a series of steps that all new clients go through so you are not reinventing the wheel over and over again.

6. Schedule a recurring meeting with your assistant. Meet on a regular basis to discuss projects, give assignments and check progress. When communication is strong between you and the people helping you, things happen faster.

7. Learn how to use the technology you already own. Take a look at some the programs you use on a regular basis like Outlook, ACT!, Camtasia, etc. Explore and learn some of the intermediate to advanced features. You’ll be shocked at how much time you can save when you stop fearing your software and start embracing it.

8. Actually use the systems you create. This is my favorite. Don’t write a system and stick it in the drawer. Share it with your team, tape it to your wall, assign it to someone. Implement, implement, implement. Did I say implement?

9. Checklists are your friend. When you are handling a task that is only done occasionally or you want to delegate it to someone else, jot down a list of all the steps. With a list of steps and actions to complete it’s easy to make sure nothing is skipped.

10. Plan out your projects. Be proactive by laying out all the steps of your project so you have a handle on everything. One of my clients, Christine did this. Instead of stressing out and handling everything for her big product launch last minute, she laid out all the systems and instead went on a week long family vacation.

Now that’s freedom. Go ahead, you can do it. Pick one of these and implement it into your own business today.

Summer is in the air! Play some. Photo by Mary MacIntyre

Gotta go to work. Enough for 4 blogs here. Take your time.

Dear Mary,

OK….here is Part Three of your e-course
“Be Successful in 2009″.

Let’s go over what we learned in parts
One and Two.

1. First you bought a notepad to record your
dream goals for 2009.

2. Second, I asked you to create a new habit and
start carrying the notepad and pen with you at all times.
(Believe me, I know that this is not an easy habit, so often
I run out to the car only to see that I have forgotten my notepad.
I usually run back in to get it but sometimes I have driven
to far to go back for it)

I will tell you that when I realized that I had forgotten my notepad
I am usually angry at myself because I know the notepad has all my
contacts and to-do action items in it, and I will be less
productive that day without it.

3. Third, I asked you to write down your success dream goals for
2009. There is no limit to what these goals are, it is completely
up to you, the sky is the limit. A new car, a new career, a new
house, finding a life partner, these are all possible dream goals.

Your dream goals my be completely different, but there is one
thing that is extremely important about your dream goals….they
are yours and yours alone. Remember that
as you visualize your dream goals and taken action towards them
they will begin to materialize almost like magic. Don’t ask me
to explain this…I can only tell you that it works.

4. In lesson two I asked you to get down to business and take
action. I asked you to make your dream goals more specific, to list
timelines to reach your goals, to list people and organizations
that can help you reach your goals. I also asked you to list any
obstacles that may stand in your way. Additionally I asked you to
identify and purchase books that would help you reach
your dream goals.

OK, now on to Lesson 3…..the most important part of the course.

DID YOU READ LESSONS 1 AND 2 CAREFULLY AND DO EVERYTHING
LISTED?

You see, lesson 3 is YOU!

Lessons One and Two. Did you take the lessons seriously?

What you did or did not do is the real lesson, you either took the
time to do each action item or you did not. Lesson 3 is all about
looking back at who you are and how you changed or did not change.

Let me explain.

Just the simple act of carrying around a simple notepad made you
a more organized and effective person in everything you do…..but
only if you did it! Those who did it will tell you that there life
has become more organized, the insurance agents number is in the
notepad, the babysitters number you needed was right there,
the flight and rental confirmation numbers were in your notepad
when the rental agent asked for them.

When you gave away something of value to a complete stranger you
changed the way the God and the universe views you! Get the
picture.

You see many people skim thru an e-mail and expect that it will
magically change their life with no requirements or action on their
part…sorry but that is not how the universe is structured.

How do I know that people skim thru these emails…..because many
people who got Lesson Two emailed me back and said they never got
Part One. If they had paid attention they would have seen that
Part One was listed at the bottom of Part Two.

Guess what…..parts One and Two will be listed in this
email…so you will have the entire course in this one email.
Don’t get me wrong….I understand that people receive tons of
emails, I do also.

But sometimes you have to decide…..can this information change my
life? If the answer is yes then you have to devote time and effort
to gathering the information and digesting it.

Is all this information new?

Of course not. In fact the foundation for this course can be found
in the classic book by Napoleon Hill titled “Think and Grow Rich”.
No, it is not a book about just money…the title is misleading.
It is the foundation by which all self improvement experts built
their successes including Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar and many others.

I recommend that you buy this book TODAY!

All I can do is give you the tools…you must do the rest.
Remember this always….failure is easy…..
if you are failing right now just keep doing what you have always
been doing and you will continue to fail. Success is not
hard, it just requires you to change your way of thinking
and take action.

Become a knowledge maniac, read everything that will help you
reach your goals!

Become a creator, visualize in your mind the dream goals
that will make you a success!

Become a doer. Like the Nike slogan….”Just Do It”

Surround yourself with success minded people….seek out
successful people and you will become like them by assimilation.

Don’t re-invent the wheel, find someone who has done what you want
to do and model yourself after them. You will gain years of
experience quickly and avoid the pitfalls they encountered.

Don’t accept failure….ever!

Oh yea…one more thing.

Remember I told you that I would give you an example
of how this success course has worked in my life.

About 3 years ago I took my family snow skiing on a beautiful
mountain in North Carolina. I fell in love with the place. I
dreamed of one day owning a 2nd home there. I drove up months later
and found a nice house, put down a small down payment and
signed a contract.

A month later the inspectors told me that the foundation was
crumbling. I was depressed, my dream house was a nightmare. I got
my money back. I did not however give up. I called realtors every
day, one day a realtor said ” I have a great piece of property but
no good deals on houses.”

Vacant property…what could I do with that? My mind started
spinning….could I build my dream house from scratch. I bought a
book on Amazon called “How to build your dream home”, (perfect
title) I did research on Google on modular construction,
panelized construction, stick built construction. (
Any of this sound familiar?)

I spoke to architects, surveyors, developers ( people resources and
organizations that could help me reach my dream home goal)

I purchased the property.

Now I spent months on planning and design and most importantly
construction financing. I had to find a bank that would finance an
author who wanted to build a dream house on the side of a mountain
5,000 feet up. An author who had NEVER built a house before.
Do you think that was easy? Of course not….I talked to dozens of
banks who all said “NO.” I did not give up, I kept
working on plans and designs and finally a banker in NC who saw my
plans and understood my determination said “YES”.

Next came the construction phase. I hired a project manager who had
built 130 homes to be my guide. ( again, I brought in people to
help me reach my dream goal) Every step of the way I enlisted the
help of others with skills that I did not have, Lawyers, surveyors,
architects, real estate agents, bankers, carpenters, plumbers,
electricians, surveyors, etc.

In each case the people I brought in to sub-contract work had years
of experience in their field. All of that experience was directed
towards the realization of my dream goal….get the picture?

During the months and months of planning and construction I had my
trusty notepad. It became filled with more phone numbers,
estimates, names, and notes then you could ever imagine. As a
matter of fact I filled up 8 notepads.

How did my dream goal come out?

See for yourself. My dream vacation home is now a beautiful resort
rental/vacation home that virtually pays for itself. Click on the
link below and see how my dream home came out.

REPEAT OF LESSON TWO ****************************

OK….here is part two of your e-course
“Be Successful in 2008″. I wanted to give you a little
time to really think about what you wanted to accomplish
in 2008 in order to truly be successful. I wanted you to
think a lot before you started part two. If you missed “Part
One” of the e-course it is listed at the bottom of this email.

Let’s do a quick recap of lesson one and see how you did.

1. Did you buy or make sure you have a yellow notepad
( or any other notepad) ?

2. OK Step 3, did you make a wish list for 2008?
This is the critical step. You must decide what you want to
accomplish in order to be successful in 2008. You cannot hit a
target if you don’t have one. Remember,
you are planning a year of your life, something you have
probably never done before. I am sure you know people who are not
succeeding in life. It may seem like things just don’t go their
way. They probably say things like
“I never get the breaks that John gets, he is a lucky guy.”

What they do not know is that John had visions and dreams, he
visualized the success that he acquired. I cannot stress to you
enough how important the visualization process is. It is THE
FOUNDATION! You must begin to visualize your dreams as listed on
your dream list as if they had
already come to
pass.

Believe that your wish list items are already a part of you, feel
the way it would feel to drive in that new car.

I asked you in Part One of this course to read your wish list
aloud every day?

Did you do that?

This is something that you could do in just a few seconds each day,
like in the morning when you wake up. Remember this, you are
learning right now the secrets of the rich and famous. Do you know
what Madonna did all the time before she became a worldwide
superstar?

She visualized herself singing on stage in
front of 1,000’s of people. Do you know what Arnold Schwarzenegger
did to become a worldwide movie star? Remember, we are talking
about a bodybuilder with no acting experience and a distinct accent
that made him sound
funny when he spoke. He visualized every day in his mind that he was
already the worlds number one movie star as if it had already
happened. Remember that
I said you will be bringing the forces of god and the universe to
your aid….this is
where it starts.

Are you going to take advantage of this secret and make it an
ingredient of the success that you will achieve in 2007? Only you
know that answer.

Remember what I said in part one….”You must stick with
it”….will you?

I have faith that you will.

OK, now onto Lesson Number Two.

You now have a notepad that contains your wish list for success
in 2008. You have now defined your goals for success in 2008…pat
yourself on the back. You have just done what 97% of the people in
the world have never done.

Now lets get into the process that will put the actions into place
which will result in you reaching your goals as defined on your wish
list.

A. Now you need to define the items on your wish list
in a more specific way. Here is an example: Let’s suppose that
one of your dream list items was a new house. Define the details
of the home of your dream. How big is it, where is it located,
what color is the outside, the inside? What kind of furniture do
you want for your house? Create a separate group of blank pages
for each item in your wish list here you can write all these things
down.

B. Determine what the time line is for reaching your goals in your
wish lists and set specific deadlines for each goal. Using the
example listed above you would write down the date that you want to
move into your new home.

C. Identify any obstacles that may stand in your way, list
them, and state how you plan to overcome them. You will
have stumbling blocks along the way, you need to find them
now so you can plan on how to overcome them.

D. Make a list of the people and/or organizations who
will help you reach your goals. Here is where most people
fail. You need to start bringing majors resources to your
aid to guarantee your success. In the example above you
would make a list of real estate companies, mortgage companies,
insurance companies, etc. Go to a bookstore or library
and borrow or buy books that tell you exactly how to buy a house
for little or no money down, or if you are building a home
buy books on how to build you own home.

This is an extremely important part of this course which most people
do not do. No matter what your dream goal is there is someone who
has spent years of their life writing about how to reach it. You
can bring years of their experience to your aid and this will help
you reach your goal more than any single thing you do other than
visualizing
your goal every day. As you read these books write down the
important points
that apply to you in your notepad workbook.

Does all of this really work?

It sure does, and at the end of this course I am going to send you
a photo of one of my dream goals that is now a reality. I did
everything I am telling you to reach this dream goal.

Oh yea….one more thing.

Before the end of the day I want you to give something of value
to a complete stranger. Here are some examples:

1. Pick a random church in your neighborhood, walk up
to the office and give them a check or some cash. It does
not have to be a lot $10 dollars, $20 dollars, whatever you
feel like you can afford today.

2. Give a homeless person some money or buy
them some food and give it to them.

3. Give a pregnant woman an old baby crib that has been in your
attic for years.

No excuse, no questions…..just do it.

As always I end each course with information on resources that can
provide addition help for you. Get in the habit of purchasing tools
that make you a smarter and more successful person.

Plug In The Winning Mindset, Eliminate Fear And Anxiety, And Tap
Into Your Endless Flow Of Spiritual Abundance In Just Minutes.
Finally, there’s a sure-fire way to achieve your goals, overcome
difficulties and start living the life you
want. It’s based on a combination of established,
time tested results and the latest study of the mind.

REPEAT OF LESSON ONE

Will 2008 be your best year ever?

Do you want 2008 to be your best year ever?

Of course you do!

Here is the best news…it’s in your power to make it your most
successful year ever. You have the God given ability to make 2007
your best
year.

Here is even better news. I am going to give you
the step by step training you need RIGHT NOW to
guarantee that 2008 will be your best year ever!
This is “part one” of a freee 3 part e-course.

It gets even better….what you are going to learn is
not difficult, in fact it’s easy….it just requires you to stick
with it….that’s all.

Can you stick with it?

Of course you can, and I believe that you will.

Why?

Because I have faith in you….I know you can do it.

(Before we get started I want to let you know that this e-course
will be coming to you in 3 parts to make it easier for you to
learn. If you are busy right now, print lesson one and read it
later when you have time to dedicate to it…it’s important. Also,
if you want
to help a friend or loved one have a successful 2007 forward this
freee
email course to them)

Be Successful in 2008… e-course “Part 1″

Now…lets get started..this is going to be fun!

I am going to start by asking you a couple of questions:

Have you ever planned for a vacation?

Have you ever planned for a wedding or other important
personal family event?

I know your answer was “yes” to at least one of the questions above!

Now, we are going to “plan” to make 2008 the best year ever for you!

Think about that statement above. You are about to plan a year
of your life! Have you ever done that before? My bet is that your
answer to that question was NO! That is exactly why you are
guaranteed to be successful….because in all your years, you have
never done what
you are about
to do.

Here is another reason why you can count on succeeding….you will
be bringing the universal forces of God and nature to your aid. You
will not be succeeding alone….you will have help. You’ll learn
more about this as the course progresses.

OK…lets get started.

As I said above, in order to make 2008 your best year ever you will
be doing something you have never done before….planning your year
and your success.

**Step 1**

This is it…this is where the rubber hits the road, this is where
your life begins to change. You are not going to believe how easy
this first step is.

I want you to go to the store TODAY and buy a yellow notepad.

WOW….that was easy! If you already own a yellow notepad you
don’t even have to go buy one. I told you that this was going to be
easy didn’t I?

**Step 2**

OK, this is a mental step. I want you to create a new habit in your
life. (Imagine that, Dan Robey the author or The Power of Positive
Habits wants you to add a new habit to your life) Well that is my
job
after all, to help you become the best you can be through new
habits.

Your new habit and mental step 2 is to carry the yellow notepad
with you EVERYWHERE YOU GO! That’s right, I said everywhere you
go. OK ladies, I know that right now you are saying “I am not
bringing that yellow
notepad to my sisters wedding next week!” You are right, you don’t
have to bring your
yellow notepad to your sisters wedding but I want you to get into
the habit of having it
with you just about all the time, at work, when you pick up the
kids at school, etc.

I can guarantee you that this one simple habit will get the
attention of people around you. People will ask you about this
yellow notepad that seems to always be with you like some new
companion. You will smile when people ask
you about your notepad because you will know how this new companion
in your life is
“changing” your life.

Guess what? I will be smiling too. Why?

Because I know that as you look down at your “life changing” yellow
notepad you will think of me :)

**Step 3**

OK, this is a fun step. I want you to make a wish list.

I want you to write down on your yellow notepad companion
a list of all the things you want in 2008. Go wild! Go crazy!

Do you want a vacation in Hawaii?

How about a new car?

Do you want a new career?

How about a new house?

I want you to be creative, I want you to visualize the things that
will make you happy and successful in 2008 and write them
all down on your yellow notepad.

That’s it! This concludes Part One of your life changing
e-course titled “Making 2007 your Best Year Ever.”

Was that hard? Of course not.

Oh, one more thing….I want you to read your “wish list” aloud
each day until you get part 2 of this e-course. This may sound silly
but trust me…it is an incredibly powerful part of the course.

Also, remember one more thing…..I love you all!

Part 2 is coming in two days so watch your email closely.

As always, I will provide you with information
at the end of each email in this e-course about tools that will
help you on your journey. Remember that the best investment
you can make is an investment in yourself.

Hey, I know you have it in you to succeed! Just keep the hay coming please...

2 blogs ago, I showed you Tom’s garden. I was impressed with the knowledge he shared and so many ideas about gardening. Here is a link and some more information. His site also has links for books, tools, and lots of raw food connects. When I find ideas that interest me, I love to take the next step to learn more.

http://www.rawvegansource.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?display=action&emptyoverride=yes&template=PDGCommTemplates/RVS/Permaculture.html

Permaculture Farms

The Raw Vegan Source store is actually just a part of a larger organization called New Earth Farm. Here at New Earth Farm, we are busy creating Heaven on Earth. We have converted half of our 1 acre property into a thriving permaculture garden.

Our gorgeous garden here at New Earth Farms produces beautiful, vital food that feeds us all for up to 10 months out of the year. That’s right, for 10 months out of the year we rarely visit the grocery store. The essence of permaculture is to intelligently create with nature so it does most of the work. After a few years of ground work, you can have a garden that grows enormous amounts of food without much effort required on your part. In the time it takes you to mow your lawn once a week, you could be feeding your family with vibrant food grown with love.

There is a big shift happening in our world right now – the days of manicured lawns are rapidly fading into history. We envision a massive movement sweeping the country, even the world, in which families convert their non-edible, chemically fertilized Kentucky Blue Grass lawns into abundant food-producing organic gardens. In our opinion, there is nothing more beautiful than a vibrant, nature friendly, bio-diverse garden anyway. We encourage you to sign up for one of our amazing permaculture courses and join us in creating the New Earth in your own backyard!

I am an inquistive sort. I loved listening to Tom Armstrong in the previous blog. So I checked out his site. Here’s his intro.
http://www.rawvegansource.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?display=home
by Tom Armstrong
We’ve all heard the statistics: 2 out of 3 people are overweight, 1 out of 3 people are obese, 2 out of 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime, 1 out of 2 people will die from heart disease or cancer (both consequences of poor lifestyle choices), and for the first time in recorded history, some people are now projecting that the lifespan of today’s children will be less than that of their parents’ due of the rise of many chronic diseases and health conditions.

Basic health today generally is the sum of three broad components: what we eat, the toxic burden of our body as a result of the toxins in our environment, and our lifestyle/outlook on life (which includes attitude, exercise, spirituality, etc.). Of these, the easiest to address because we all have to eat is considering our food choices. Read more

It finally rained last night and I was overjoyed. I had a super busy day and had not been able to water the garden. When it rains in the southwest, a garden will supercharge a growth spurt. It’s dramactic and can visually be seen. This morning I went out and harvested some yellow tear drop tomatoes, basil, dill flowers and just loved witnessing the garden’s progress. Fresh peas also tasted fine.

New Suggestions For Local Food Eating

Thursday, July 16th, 2009
Take your challenges in hand

Take your challenges in hand

Are you eating locally grown food? Summer time is a wonderful time to up your local food intake. Farmers markets make it easy. Perhaps you also have some local farms with pick your own, or gardens. Also some of these farmers might do a crop share or animal share. This way you can help the farmer defer costs of feeding and raising the animal so you either get lost cost milk, cheese etc, or a part of the animal to eat later. This is important too for stocking up for the winter. More on this later.

I found the following article which may add to these suggestions.

Our society’s growing consciousness about the impact of our actions on the planet’s health and well-being is being felt in the kitchen. Increasingly, the trend in recipes and cooking revolves around finding ingredients that are produced locally. Home cooks are recognizing that fruit and vegetables grown in other states and other countries gobble up energy to package and transport them to market. This leaves a big carbon footprint - a consequence that a growing number of families wish to avoid.

As a result, shoppers are seeking out fresh food and produce that is locally grown. For some, this means regularly visiting farmers markets; for others, it means inquiring about the source of fresh food at the grocery store. Many others have the desire to take steps toward finding recipes and cooking with fresh produce and other ingredients, but aren’t sure where to begin.

Thank goodness for the Internet! For those ready to take the first steps, there is an abundance of information available on the Web. Armed with this information, shoppers can learn how to buy fresh produce, discover the types of produce that are in season, read articles about fresh food, and find recipes to prepare everything from delectable fresh fish, seafood, and meat dishes to delicious vegetable courses and dessert treats.

Moreover, home cooks are discovering that cooking with locally grown fresh foods opens the door to a world of cuisines - literally. Today’s recipes and cooking trends put a global twist on fresh ingredients. If you’re in the mood for Asian food, for example, you don’t have to dine out. Instead, you can use the Web to research Asian food culture and find recipes that are easy to make at home. Likewise, resources for French food, German food, Italian food, and Mexican food are only a few mouse clicks away.

Vegetarians and those who are health-conscious are truly embracing these recipes and cooking trends. In the past several years, natural and organic foods have been finding their way onto grocery store shelves, and stores that specialize in fresh and natural foods are now a staple in virtually every city. Whether you adhere to a raw food diet or are simply trying to cut back on butter or sugar, you can more easily find the foods that you need.

At its best, cooking is an adventure. It’s fun to experiment with different herbs and spices, and to prepare your favorite foods in a new way. Combining local, fresh foods with global recipes and cooking techniques is a great way to keep your cuisine interesting and tasty.

No one would argue that eating only locally grown foods can be a challenge. After all, it would be difficult to find fresh fish and seafood if you live in the desert, or unearth a source for locally churned butter if you live in a fishing village. Just keep in mind that perfection needn’t be the goal; even incremental changes in the way we think and shop will help the planet. And, with the plethora of information about recipes and cooking that is available on the Web, putting a global twist on local ingredients can put the adventure back in dining!

Wow! This will be a great series of talks and more! Unfortunately, I work on Wednesday nights.

If you are interested in these composers’ ideas…travel round the internet some. Also in the future the Complex plans to make videos available. Mary

Santa Cruz, NM composer and musical scholar James Brody launches a series of musical investigations of the work of eight contemporary composers: Iannis Xenakis, Franz Kamin, Milton Babbitt, Brian Ferneyhough, John Cage, Elliott Carter, Igor Stravinsky and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Brody will mentor an extensive audience discussion and use technology to represent the music visually during thee sessions.

Most Western classical music is complex because the rule systems used to create it are themselves quite complex and usually found in the realm of the classically trained composer. The 20th century launched musical explorations of a different form of complexity that moved far beyond the traditional rule systems and into a consideration of some of the contemporary meanings of complexity. Many listeners found their work too difficult and tuned out, thereby losing much of the energy and creativity that flowed through the musical explorations of leading composers during the last 100 years. Each session will emphasize the work of one or two leading composers with the goal of reconnecting listeners to their music.

jamesbrody200Composer James Brody revisits this work in a series of interactive explorations at the Complex as part of the Summer@TheComplex series. James studied composition at Indiana University with Iannis Xenakis and Franz Kamin and was a teaching assistant in the electronic studio during its first years at IU. Brody wrote the liner notes for the original Nonesuch LP of Iannis Xenakis – Electroacoustic Music. He was co-founder of the FIASCO group in Bloomington, CAPASA in San Antonio and the Baltimore Composers Forum. In 1970, he taught composition, theory and electronic music at East Texas State University. He has written many electroacoustic and instrumental works and was honored at the 2009 Society of Composers meeting held last May in Santa Fe.

Computer troubles today. I am borowing a friends, computer. I’m including this blurb because I know if you are suffering from insomnia, ALL the information you can get may help. I am nor suggesting you buy anything. Start with the concept and see what you can do….

Big Sky Big Changes Photo by Mary MacIntyre

Big Sky Big Changes Photo by Mary MacIntyre

Dear Mary,

Are you getting enough sleep every night?

Did your know that the way you talk to yourself about
sleep during the day affects your sleep at night?

Many people fall into this negative self-talk trap.
If they have a bad night’s sleep, they will say things like:

“I never sleep well anymore.”

“I just know I am going to have trouble sleeping tonight.”

“I did not get enough sleep last night; I am going to feel
terrible today.”

The way you think during the day can affect how you sleep.
Consciously changing those thoughts is called cognitive
restructuring.

Gregg Jacobs Ph.D.., author of Say Good Night to Insomnia, says,
“In short, cognitive re-structuring will be the initial catalyst
for improving your sleep and yourself in a number of important
ways.”

Make it a habit to replace your negative self-talk about sleep with
positive self-talk:

” I know I will sleep well tonight.”

“My day is not determined by just the amount of sleep I got
last night.”

“Every day, my sleep is improving.”

2 birds nests on one cactus!

Watch for the next blog for two recipes of other fine drinks. It’s summer splurge! Oops the next 2 recipes will be on Http://coachingcooking.com

It’s summer and for the next 2 weeks I am housesitting, gardening, and even working some extra hours at work. I could choose to be stressed, however this time I am choosing to REDUCE my stress. The operative word is CHOOSE. I normally do not remain centered enough to even think about my choices. Just becoming more clear about what I am “willing” to do helps reduce stress dramactically.

In addition, I will go slower on some things, and I am taking time to really enjoy my food! Yesterday I received some great food from two different gardens. While visiting one friend I saw a coyote run away from the yard. It moved very fast, and although my friend doesn’t want to encourage it, I still appreciated its beauty and grace. Food fresh from the garden does taste so much better! Readon for the recipe link.
