10 ways to increase fitness and quality of life now.

1)Let’s have some fun now.
2)Have family? Have a local park? Go play, swing, etc.
I recently discovered a park where the play equipment included swings large enough for adults. I can work my legs easily without over stressing them, do upper body work, and have fun.
3) The monkey bars, or similar devices. Hanging is one of the best way to safely stretch your entire back and arms. Relieve stress fast, grab hold and hang. Tall? Lift up your legs a little. Do not over strain yourself. At first maybe only 10-15 minutes.
4) Walk or play ball.
5)Watch kids run around.
Quality of life:
6) Spend sometime outside, even if doing some brief yardwork.
7) do frequent weather or nature meditations. Just watch and breathe.
8) Short walks with family: excellent way to have one to one special time with each child.
9)Werever you are: stretch. This doesn’t have to be a whole workout. One stretch will make a difference.
10) Aprreciate everything you do. This is your life. Bless yourself too.

By practising simple little things often one can lighten up a little. Relaxation and connectedness to our world and friends is enhanced. We may experience improved energy, sleep, and health.

Sometimes the greatest effort is breaking habit and inertia. We become caught in routines, work, stress, and bustle. I was on a mini road trip visiting the ski basin the other day. My elder friend couldn’t walk much. I was about to return with her to the car. Instead I chose to walk a little further. I was delighted with all I saw and the crisp fresh mountain air. Then I happened to look up and saw a large hawk.
I began to quietly sing to it. I kept walking closer. It watched me. WHen I was almost three feet from the tree, it took flight. I watched her glide over the valley and mountain tops. Amazing. I sent out prayers. Life improved fast by looking up.

Create Adventure Within 30 miles of home

A friend and I recently both noted that we get stuck in our thinking, attitude, and habit when we stay in town too long. Challenge: with low budgets, escape can be difficult.

She recently accepted a housitting job which gave her a nice car to drive. We decided to go up to the ski basin. It’s about 15 miles from her house. We ran away for half an afternoon, and felt like we had been gone a week. A short drive, with time for stops and short walks opened our lungs and our perspectives. Cost: time and gas. Well I did take her out to lunch, so under $25.

We are fortunate in that we live in a beautiful location. However I have also lived in Kansas and Baltimore. Baltimore with no car wasn’t too bad, I could grab public transportation or walk and be at wonderful museums or restaurants. In fact all I had to do was walk about 2 blocks and go transform my day with a cup of soup, some bread in a local Spanish Seafood restaurant.

Wichita KS had a lot to offer, especially on-campus. Yet when I got a car, just driving out into the country would expand my viewpoints and attitudes.

Wherever you live, in these times, planning a few adventures each month could greatly improve your health. As a grad student we might all chip in for gas and food. (I was in my 40’s when I was a grad student.) Find a way to go beyond your daily stomping grounds, and see how a few hours can refreshen the brain and your mood. Key is: this is your life now, make it wonderfull. Write to me about your adventures. ALso go to www.writersunbound.com if you have good stories to share. Thanks!

OH, this going to be entering my doom..blah blah…hey don’t interrupt my doom!

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Hey don't interrupt me entering my doom!

Hey don't interrupt me entering my doom!

We were at our indoor pool. I was alerady in the water which was cold! My friend was taking her time, as she realized that I was serious. We prefer warm water. I mentioned that she had come this far, and she needed to get in. She muttered a few things, whoahing the dilema, I am going to enter my doom. I said something erroneous. She said. “Hey! Don’t interrupt me, “I’m entering my doom!” I broke up laughing.

The punchline her is 2 fold: I broke up laughing. I feel that I need to find the way to laugh more and more lately. Everything can be so daunting, and perhaps a little serious. Like the new Obama budget. Overwhelming. I heard the other day that they figured the Social Security problem could be fixed for the next 75 years with $500 billion.
Instead a trillion for 1 year. Do you need to find more ways to laugh?

Second moral: Have you noticed that some people are either really insensitive to those in need, hurting, unemployed, poor, etc, or are super positive as if nothing wrong is going on? Or people who are heavily invested in their tragedy and doom? So I expanded the topic a bit.
In addition to laughter, I am practising compassion. I need some balance. I know that high numbers of unemployed doesn’t mean one needs to not find a job. 2 of my longer periods of unemployment were in “recessions” with significantly higher percentages of unemployment. Once I loosened the reins on what would be acceptable jobs, I found work. During another recession, I was visible enough that people kept wanting to give me jobs, even when I had one! Those were the days. I doubt it would be as easy now. I’d rather keep creating my own jobs.

In times like these, compassion becomes more and more essential. People are urting and struggling, and may be at a loss for their next step. They needs friends, and people who understand. Once my friend got in the water, she did fine. I shivered more than normal, but then I knew I’d have the sauna right after. It’s good to have a sauna. Great tool to help face the world.

More to laugh about later.

Guide to Eating Healthy

Do you want to have a healthy lifestyle but you do not know what to do first? Are you confused with all those methods that say theirs is the best one? Eating healthy is not about what kind of diet or school of thought you are going to follow. This is about changing some aspects of your lifestyle, especially those that are related to eating habits. If you want to know more, just read the following guidelines for eating healthy.

The first thing that you need to know is your body’s calorie requirement. Some people like athletes or those who always undergo strenuous physical activities need more calories than an average individual. Also, ask your doctor about your metabolism. If your body can digest foods fast, then it is okay for you to eat more calories than those people who have slow metabolic rate. Amount of calorie intake is also determined by your body mass. If you are a person with a natural big built, you require more calories than naturally petite or small people.
Fatty foods are not your enemy—as long as they have the right kinds of fats. You need these fats to make your body function well. Good kind of fats is the monounsaturated fats that increase level of good cholesterol and lower the amount of bad cholesterol. Foods with this kind of fats are some types of seed oils, fish oil, nuts, and olive oil.

Some diet plans require the dieter to eat fewer carbohydrates or even no carbohydrates at
all. This should not be the case. Carbohydrates provide your body with the energy you
need to do physical activities. Again, what you need is the right kind of carbs such as
complex carbs. . Carbohydrates in these foods are slower to process and will not have
bad effects to your body…

MacIntyre says:
If you are happy with your body, health, and lifestyle: great. You might want to tweak a few areas so that in 10-30 years you can be as happy. I am 30 plus years beyond when I first considered these questions. Although I am healthier than most of my family, and many of my contemporaries. My life recently did a major turnaround. Short story, with help, I have new goals for the next 20-30 years. Changes help one re-focus.

Calories are far less important than most think. If you eat certain types of food you can eat a lot and lose or maintain weight. Ask me how. Even with a slow metabolism. I know I have done it.

Oils could be a very long conversation. Cut out soy, corn, canola oils. Enjoy others in moderation. Use flax and fish supplements high in Omega 3 often.

The carb section had a major error, so I changed it. Even complex carbs may be hard to digest,
and many people have allergies to these substances. Three big ones are: Wheat, soy, corn. Either reduce these ingredients, or use in moderation. Ex: 1 serving of soy a day. Also read labels. This is all for now. Ideas: www.coachingcooking.com

Milk may be questionable, however focus on all the real food they can choose from! A good deal of fresh and raw too. So leave comments and you can also tweet me at: www.twitter.com/Makkinart

Hey, I know you have it in you to succeed! Just keep the hay coming please...

Hey, I know you have it in you to succeed! Just keep the hay coming please...

Earlier today I wrote a blog about the new movie: scroll down and find it. I made a diversion about a friend, and need to say that that sssituation is not a generalization. There are millions of people in the USA earnestly seeking employment. My heart goes out to each of those individuals, and to their families. I could go on and on about my opinions here.

When disaster strikes, people are moved to examine their deepest values and rally strengths yet unknown. Courage combined with creativity sometimes promote incredible solutions to difficult times. I pray for you, and from time to time will make suggestions. A few yuears back there was a book, “Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson. The “cheese” has not only been moved, but for thousands, it is GONE. In this book suggestions proclaimed that people need to drop their own assumptions, and retool themselves quickly to be open to new opportunities. The rat race may no longer function as a treadmill. Step off, and see what else is working. One option is to create your own company or job.

Here’s some other sources for creative ideas during changing times:

Almost spring SW

Almost spring SW

http://www.greatworkmovie.com/

It’s Sunday afternoon, and I want to go out and play. I will write one blog instead of 4 more blogs and return this evening. Looked for an album to listen to and couldn’t find it.

Misc.
Thus I found something else to inspire me.
Now I can settle in and write rather quickly? Tomorrow will be a work filled day to which my mind or perhaps body rebelled against. I will put on my solution finder cloak and…it is that bad, as many new “situations” arrived unexpectedly on Friday. Exhale. Breath flows back in. At least I have lots of work to do.

Many of my frriends and associates are dealing with all those folks unemployed. Even my relatively secure PT job may evaporate, or have serious hour reduction. Again I have multiple jobs and can expand my owrk online. It’s the timing that makes everything awkward. C’est la vie for the little guy.

These thoughts mad Michael Bengay Stanier’s new movie: perfect timer, as it redirects my thinking. Everyone should watch it, and if you are lucky enough to read this blog before midnight 2/22/09, you can also download the 46 page 3 chapters workbook from his about to be published new book!

Michael from Box of Crayons also has other films you may want to watch. Intermission:

Music can make all the difference too. Erase fear and worry for the moment. Make notes for an action plan. What can you offer the world fast and maintain GREAT WORK? A friend of mine is sitting and collecting unemployment for a “break”. She may need it, but what about creating positions or opportunites where one may work, do good, help others? IS life about sitting back and taking it easy?

Frankly everyone gets to choose her own course. Yeah the guys too. I choose to work odd jobs so I have freedom to pursue my health, my art, and dreams. I get by usually. The government doesn’t support me. Though they could.

Everyone younger, and with family, and big normal bills really are pushed much further. Lifes are crashing on cold concrete. SO share ideas and this blog or movie to help open eyes, and directions. Praise be and love to all! PS Dare to be great!

Ageing? Let the elders speak up!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009
Stay strong!

Stay strong!

Ever get tired of a pretty young face lecturing you on what we should do to stay young? I used to be one of those young ones. Remarkably, I was gentler then. I gave my Mom something to read or try, and let her do what she wanted to. Luckily for me, Mom became enthused and took off researching and learning on her own. Here a curious 5 tip article by China-Rose Reid, a doula, herbalist in Napa (Ca?).
http://image.pharmaca-wellmail.com/lib/feef1c75736203/m/1/Top+5+Supps4Healthy+Aging2.pdf Read it.

1) Mobility. Feldencris, yoga, tai chi are all ways to keep your flexibility. I marvel at a co-workers strength and flexibility. His yoga and tai chi serves him well and he has greater mobility in his sixites than many of the 30 year olds in his department. When moving about decreases so does mood, attitude, and confidence. Add gardening to this group.
2) Choose your supplements to meet your individual needs. If it ain’t broke you don’t need to fix it. Maybe it still would be smart to take some joint supps 1-3 times a week. Ditto fish oil. However you don’t have to create a $200 a month habit if you have no problems. However if you are taking medications, then a prudent review of your health would benefit by adding various supplements. Especially for damage control and increased energy.
3)Play, stay active and cultivate a positive attitude. Adults often become too serious. Lighten up. Play with grandkids some. Tell jokes. Play games. An active lifestyle does more for mental well being than almost any supplement. I love Holy Basil. Also Rescue remedy. And swinging.
4) Bone health is becoming a controversial subject. Please do research on this topic. Calicum is the least important mineral. Exercise is your best friend. Other minerals that help: boron, silica (also horsetail the herb) collagen, magnesium, Vitamin D3. Vit K for some people. Check with the literature and your practioner.
5) The brain. Start reading. Ginkgo can spike blood pressure. COQ10 seems to be good support. B-complex works well. Read what the B’s do. Amino acids. Maybe niacinimide (in the B groups) Pro-biotics. If your brain is still sharp, choose one or two products. I like supplements that do multiple activities. COQ10 is in every cell in your body. Read how probiotics can feed the brain, ditto the b vitamins. More on the brain another time.

Add your tips for Keeping Kids Healthy!

Plant healthy happy attitudes

Plant healthy happy attitudes

Just read an article by Julie Plunket from San Diego. SHe’s a medical herbalist. I am no pro but a life long health nut who reads a lot (and have tried a few things). Her article, and do read: http://image.pharmaca-wellmail.com/lib/feef1c75736203/m/1/Top+5+Habits4Healthy+Kids.pdf

Hmmm, of all that we do to help kids stay healthy, what are my top 5?

1) Teach your kids about GOOD food. Old fashioned breakfasts seem outdate. However be very cautious with the slick new substitues. READ the labels. Cut sugar, fructose ( made from corn), soy, etc. It would be better to have sandwiches, cold hard boil eggs, leftovers from the night before, fruit, nuts, or veggies than the over processed alternatives.
Encourage them to create their breakfast before supper. Perhaps the family could even make healthy muffins, breads (zuchinni bread, cranberry bread…always add nuts) Yogurt is a fairly safe snack. Have it ready to grab aand go. USe oats whenever possible. Less processed, and NO SUGAR!
2) Brain food. Fish, fish oil, dha. There are more. Google brain food for kids. A good breakfast and a little healthy oil can keep them alert for many hours. If the brain is well fed: they get along in school better, increase their focus, and modulate their moods. Try to find food options before supplements. A good multi vitamin mineral is a good idea too.
3) Fun! Playtime. Here they learn to relax, socialize, and work off a lot of stress. All aspects of play encourage the body to build a healthier immune system. Also confidence and a positive outlook.
4) Music and imagination and art. Fill in the blanks. They need to both learn, but have time alone to develop their own thoughts and style.
5) Love, probiotics, and rest. Seem like too easy a recipe. We all crave love. They need you NOW, and more. They need to learn from you. They need to feel secure, even the teenagers.
Also probiotics. 70% of your immune system is in your gut. Healthy flora needs to be there to eradicate an overgrowth of toxic waste from the “other bacteria”. Save the herbs for when the kids are ill. Probiotics will always thrive. Imagine your kids as healthy and strong with a happy immune system.

Alligator WInter Skin? Or just thinking healthy skin?

Moisturize!

Moisturize!

Many men and women worry about their skin, and buy thousands of dollars of products to stay young and beautiful! Much of what people wear actually is toxic for both your skin and internal organs. I just read an article by Erica Louis from South Boulder (CO) about skin.
She a Professional: her article: http://image.pharmaca-wellmail.com/lib/feef1c75736203/m/1/Top+5+Tips4Youthful+Skin.pdf Do read and compare.

She doesn’t speak to whose ageing skin. Are we talking 28-34 yr olds?
Ladies or men in their 50’s,60’s 70’s? Or what type of skin that they have. If you are interested in learning natural ways to care for your skin, then do consult pro’s, especially affordable ones in health food stores. Only then, you may get enough information to really help. You also might choose to consult a professional w/a private practise where they can spend more time with you.
I am NOT a professional but have attended many trainings by professional and read a lot. SO here are my thoughts and think about them.
1) DO your research. Learn which ingredients that you are willing to include in a regimen. WHat is in those creams does go into your skin and into your blood.
2) Do not exfoliate often. Masks can be slightly safer. You have a sub layer to your skin that is made mostly of fat cells. This layer is an essential part of your immune defense system. When you exfoliate, you remove and expose a lot of these cells! Wash your face with warm water. Pat dry. Try a mask that you can use for a few up to 15 minutes. I enjoy adding Green Magma (dried barley leaves powder) to Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. While the clay sucks out toxins, the barley seems to soak in and feeds the skin. Wash face clean. Add Weleda oils a few hours later. They also replenish the oils and feed the skin. DO this once or twice a month. As my skin is super fragile and sensitive I may do this once every 2-3 months.
3)Eat good food. Place with blended veggies and fruits as masks. Carrots, cucumbers, parlsey, as examples. Optional add healthy oils: jojoba, coconut, shea butter, olive oil. I go to one spa that has cucumber water for hydration. Yummy.
4) Biosil or horsetail horsetail are inexpensive ways to stimulate collagen growth, and bone cell growth. Also good for joints.
5) Hydration. Berries? Water yes. Banannas. Reseach more. New Chapter Super omega7, and Weleda Sea Buckthorn Oil also are premium products.

I had more leeway than Ms Erica Louis did. Do read her article to comapre opions.

So go horseback riding? As I mentioned before, be gentle and do your research.

Laugh, sing, and dance! Create days of love!

This grass dances! Even in Mid winter!

This grass dances! Even in Mid winter!

Just because valentine’s is over, doesn’t mean you can’t create days of love. Google: Peace in 5 years. Sing! or SIng along, or listen to music, music, music, or make your own.

Perhaps not what you expected. Yes we can start with the lighthearted. Play again and laugh some more. I like Robin’s music. Perhaps the brain began to relax and you started to feel better. The pictures invited your body to roam. Roll some more.

Now sway with Jesse’s Cook’s rhythms. Perhaps a yearning moves within. Stand up and let the body sway. Listen go deeper within, and then stretch. Open your your lungs. MOve to every note. Breath again. Let you r hips sway , and turn around turna around, turn around.

Drum and dance the tempo has changed, the world has changed, and you are changing, dance, dance, dance or drum on everything. Let those head and shoulders roll. Come on a smile may cross your face. Yes happiness in the winter, anytime. Share this with friends. Dance laugh, sing!

Yes, I include the unexpected. I have never listened to this poem. What would you write, what do you see, how do you feel? If you could create more days of love, how would you sculpt them? Would your reach beyond your nest, family, safe zones? Would you help the poor, lonely, forgotten? Would you let your spirit beam as your days journey before you? There are some who believe that if we conduct our days with love, and expand into our communites that these times will reach into the universe, and peace will spread as fast as spring rains flood the earth, and rivers swell with snow melt, and earth according prings forth. Dare yea join such a borderless faithful awakening? Thank you for reading. Drum!

Innovative Thinking 101

Now what could you do with this?

Now what could you do with this?

Short blog and test here. I want to see if this PDF will copy here. Not. Phooey. As my time is short I need to be creative.

So this is the most exciting crop. Well I’ll cover a few obvious points, and then ramble some.
1) Brainstorm.
2) Dream
3) Write like crazy. Just let words hit the page and bounce. Reread later.
Ramble: This is the fun part. If you are going to start a projects list fast 10-30 goals. What do want this project to do for you?
Commercial: I had an appointment with my friend and doctor yesterday and we both showed up early, and we expected to find a room at the center, but they were all full. So I suggested that we go walk in the labryinth. I’m no expert however, these are suppose to be mindful walks, often done in silence, and usually I am awakened to beauty, peace, and new thoughts there.

How? I slow down, go into my self, and breathe, and go out into the world and watch, and try not to trip on the wooden stakes as guides.
Yesterday we talked, I nearly tripped, and proceeded. I mostly listened to what the DOM friend was talking about. I absorbed the cool air and joy, we were walking. I did a silent prayer when we came to the buddha. I don’t pray to the buddha, I just do my own prayer. I gave thanks and we returned back through the spiral. At the beginning/end place stopped, and did a silent intention for my friend from what he had said. I had no idea what would happen in our walk.

Back to thinking. Let your heart speak. Step aside for the brain to generate possibilities. Listen. Find ways to open yourself beyond your immediate assumptions. Make notes for future sessions.
Breathe.
Another friend speaks about becoming aaware of the lens you look through. Then she suggests picking another lens to see the situation from another viewpoint. IDentify the aspects of that lens. Make notes. Each lens will be good to recall later. Have fun.

Beat the Computer and other blues

Road trip when you can...

Road trip when you can...

Let me count the ways, that computers can add to the blues. I doubt you have ever experienced the dilemas invoked by “error” mesages, or your internet service provider suddenly going on a funk, or….

a friend and client of mine wants to figure out the problem: maybe it’s the wind, or the full moon. The cause is irrevelant: we need to find another way to get this done. Today my computer frequently seemed irrevelant. Exasperated, I turned it off for awhile.

Usually I just try another approach, ex: I used another email to mail important information. I deleted as mant emails as I could to relieve frustration.
I was even luckier, and took almost two hours to have an ionic foot bath (as I had to return the machine today) and watched Elizabeth the Golden age to feel empowered again.

Most days don’t include such luxouries. So here are a few more tips:
- destress quickly. even listening to some music on youtube can help.
-if possible get up and stretch or walk. When totally frustrated with a client AND her computer, I just stood up and walked around the room while she did the next task.
- make a quick list of 5 other was you may get around the current problem.
-Breathe!
So make your list of 5 other ways to approach the challenge you most often face. Keep them near by, for ready reference. Add to the list any time you want.

Return to the project once you are sure your lungs are functioning. Send a shout out thanking friends, universe, spirit. Smile, and then laugh.
Quiz can you apply any of these ideas to “other blues”?

Also thanks for all the kind comments.
